Icons Re/Outfitted

Iconic chairs upcycled with discarded denim

In an era of growing mountains of textile waste, we are embarking on an exploration of innovative solutions to repurpose discarded denim. ‘Icons Re/Outfitted’ is a transformative journey where iconic chairs from Vitra (such as Eames, Panton and Prouvé) are given a new lease of life using denim waste from Levi’s®.

Icon meets icon

This project, initiated by The Visionary Lab explores the intersection of fashion and furniture. The result is an unprecedented collaboration between renowned brands Vitra and Levi's®, uniting iconic design chairs with equally iconic denim, complemented by talented designers who regard the chairs as their muse. Nkwo Onwuka, Hannah Brabon, Kelly Konings, Tim Dekkers, Sophie Cagniart, Norman Monsanto, Barbara Polderman and Sarmite Polakova were invited to reimagine Vitra design masterpieces with bold new looks made from discarded denim. The result is a fascinating series of artful chairs that showcase a diverse spectrum of innovative techniques and time-honored crafts.

The art of change

The upcycled and transformed chairs transcend mere functionality and weave stories of heritage, innovation and sustainability. They not only provoke reflection but also inspire change, as each unique piece tells a universal message: “waste isn't waste until you waste it”. Ultimately, ' Icons Re/Outfitted ' is an artistic celebration of craftsmanship and the well-being of our planet, and shows the possibilities of end-of-life denim for both the fashion and interior design industries.

Come and see this special exhibition at the Vitra Circle Store Zaandam until Saturday 31 March 2024.
