Vitra Circle & Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum
Royal Tichelaar; 450 years of craftsmanship and innovation
Koninklijke Tichelaar is the oldest ceramics company in the Netherlands. For 450 years, products from Makkum, made from Frisian clay from the area, have found their way all over the world. Architects and designers know where to find Koninklijke Tichelaar because of its experience and the unique knowledge it has about raw materials, production techniques and glaze recipes. In doing so, the company is constantly searching for the boundaries of ceramics to arrive at innovative applications.
From 13 August to 30 September 2022, the old pottery factory on the Turfmarkt in Makkum will be temporarily converted into an Open Atelier. Building on the knowledge and experience of Koninklijke Tichelaar, three design studios will explore the possibilities for processing residual materials in glaze and ceramics. In addition, visitors will be taken on a journey through the rich history of Frisian pottery. This activity is organised by Stichting Frysk Tichelwurk, which was established especially for this celebration.
Vitra Circle will provide products for this occasion to furnish the Open Atelier. The sustainable vision, the craftsmanship and of course the celebration of the 450th anniversary of Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum makes this collaboration extra special.
