DIY repair pilot Vitra Circle Store Zaandam
On Wednesday 3 May 2023, the kick-off of The ReUse Alliance took place, an alliance of *16 partners consisting of furniture companies, sustainable changemakers, thrift stores, repairers, second-hand platforms and scientists. They signed the manifesto, containing their vision and agreements on a circular furniture sector in 2030. This is urgently needed to prevent waste of raw materials and combustion of materials. Ultimately, reuse must become the new normal in the Netherlands, as must high-quality and sustainable jobs in the repair sector.
Every year, around 247 million kilos of furniture are thrown away in the Netherlands. These end up on the waste mountain and are largely incinerated*. The incineration of materials, especially plastic, has a major CO2 impact. The production of furniture also has a major impact, so it is a waste to throw them away before they are worn out. Organisations that join The ReUse Alliance therefore focus on reuse and longer lifespan. This can involve second-hand, refurbishment and repair.
Pilots focused on furniture repair and the sale of second-hand products are an important activity of the alliance. Vitra Circle Store Zaandam is currently running a DIY repair pilot to get a good picture of the Vitra assembly videos (step-by-step replacement of spare parts) and/or whether these repairs are easy to perform for the consumer. We also want to get an idea of the consumer's need for self-replacement versus outsourcing to a professional.
On May 25th we emailed our **customer base asking them to participate in this pilot. In exchange for free repair parts, customers are asked to give feedback on our DIY videos and how to perform the repair. In a live workshop day we want to go a bit deeper into the need for explanation of the consumer with a DIY repair.
